Newland, NC – The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties, remaining in effect from 1 a.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters expect snow accumulations of up to 3 inches, with locally higher totals near 4 inches possible along the highest peaks of the North Carolina mountains. Areas above 3,500 feet are expected to see the most accumulation, while valley locations could receive up to an inch of snow Monday morning.

The snow will begin in the early morning hours Monday and continue through the evening. The Monday morning and evening commutes are both likely to be affected by snow-covered roads and slick travel conditions.

The NWS warns that the heavy wet snow could also cause scattered power outages, particularly in higher elevations where accumulations will be greatest.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use caution, and allow extra time for travel. Road condition updates are available by calling 511.
