Morristown, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of far western North Carolina and southeastern Tennessee as accumulating snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, 2 to 4 inches of snow are forecast from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. EST Saturday across Cherokee and Clay counties in North Carolina and East Polk County in Tennessee. Wind gusts up to 35 mph may accompany the snowfall, particularly across higher terrain.

Communities included in the warning range from Murphy, Andrews, Hayesville, Brasstown, and Topton in North Carolina to Ducktown, Turtletown, and Big Frog Mountain in Tennessee. Forecasters note that locally higher snowfall amounts are possible over higher mountain peaks, where temperatures and elevation favor greater accumulation.

The National Weather Service warns that travel could become difficult by Friday evening, with hazardous conditions expected overnight into Saturday. Snow-covered roads, slick bridges, and reduced visibility are likely, especially on mountain passes, secondary roads, and shaded areas where treatment is limited.

While expected totals are modest compared to larger winter storms, even a few inches of snow can significantly impact travel in mountainous terrain. Gusty winds may also contribute to blowing snow at higher elevations, further reducing visibility at times.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the road should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and check current road conditions by calling 511 before departing.

Snowfall is expected to taper off Saturday evening, but lingering slick spots may persist into the night, especially in higher elevations and less-traveled areas. Motorists, outdoor workers, and weekend travelers should plan accordingly.
