Western New York – A widespread Winter Storm Warning is in effect across much of western and north-central New York, with heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions expected through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The warning includes Niagara, Orleans, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 5 to 12 inches, with the highest accumulations forecast across the Chautauqua Ridge, Boston Hills, Tug Hill Plateau, and portions of northern Niagara and Orleans counties.

The National Weather Service reported that snow will intensify this evening as colder air moves into the region, with lake-effect snow developing and persisting into Thursday and early Friday. In Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, snow will begin on higher elevations before becoming more widespread overnight.

Forecasters warned that travel will be difficult to dangerous, particularly during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Roads may quickly become snow-covered, and visibility may be reduced at times due to heavier snow bands.

In addition to snowfall, wind chills are expected to fall below zero Thursday into Friday morning, increasing the risk of frostbite and compounding travel hazards for stranded motorists.

The National Weather Service emphasized that snowfall amounts may vary significantly over short distances, especially in areas affected by persistent lake-effect bands. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, carry emergency supplies, and check local road conditions before heading out.

Residents are encouraged to submit snowfall reports to the National Weather Service through its website or official social media channels as the storm unfolds.
