Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Frost Advisory for much of western and central New York, warning that subfreezing temperatures late Thursday night could bring widespread frost by early Friday morning.
The advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Friday for Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Chautauqua, and Wyoming counties, including Buffalo, Rochester, Canandaigua, Jamestown, and Warsaw.
Forecasters say temperatures will dip into the upper 20s and lower 30s, cold enough to kill sensitive vegetation if left unprotected. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the NWS advised.
Rural and inland valleys are expected to see the most significant frost formation, while areas closer to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario may remain slightly milder due to lake influence.
Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors, cover gardens, and disconnect outdoor hoses ahead of the chill. More cold mornings are possible into the weekend as fall temperatures continue to drop across upstate New York.
