Buffalo, NY – Rising rivers and water-covered roads could become a reality across western and north-central New York starting Tuesday morning as heavy rain combines with melting snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Flood Watch is in effect from 8 a.m. Tuesday through Wednesday evening. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas.

The greatest concern is across the Tug Hill region and western Adirondack drainages, where snowpack melt will add to runoff. Rivers like the Black River near Watertown could approach or exceed bankfull levels, increasing the risk of flooding in nearby communities.

Cities including Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, and Jamestown may also see localized flooding in poor drainage areas, especially during heavier downpours. Roads, underpasses, and low-lying spots could quickly fill with water.

Residents should monitor forecasts closely and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Those in flood-prone areas should be ready to act if warnings are issued.

The flood threat will continue through Wednesday evening as multiple rounds of rain move through the region. Additional alerts are likely if rainfall intensifies or waterways rise faster than expected.
