Buffalo, NY – While Christmas Day will remain largely quiet, forecasters are monitoring a developing winter storm that could bring accumulating snow and ice to parts of western New York on Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, accumulating snow and/or a wintry mix including sleet and freezing rain is possible from Friday afternoon through Friday night. Forecast graphics show moderate to high uncertainty regarding snowfall totals and the exact extent of any wintry mix.

The highest chances for a wintry mix with freezing rain are focused across the western Southern Tier, where temperatures may remain cold enough for ice accumulation. Elsewhere across western New York, snow is favored, though confidence remains lower on exact amounts.

Additional graphics indicate a chance for measurable freezing rain Friday evening, particularly south and southwest of the Buffalo metro area. Forecasters noted that even light ice accumulation could result in slick travel conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

The National Weather Service emphasized that conditions may change as the storm approaches and encouraged residents to stay alert for updated forecasts and possible advisories.

Travelers planning to be on the roads Friday are advised to monitor weather updates closely and allow extra time in case hazardous conditions develop.
