Kansas City, MO – Quiet weather today will give way to a more dangerous setup by late Sunday afternoon, when severe storms could quickly disrupt travel and utilities across Missouri and eastern Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Level 3 out of 5 severe weather risk is in place Sunday, with storms expected to develop after 4 p.m. and intensify into the evening. The greatest threat zone stretches from west-central Missouri into much of eastern Kansas, including the Kansas City metro.
Cities along I-70 and I-35 corridors—including Kansas City, Topeka, St. Joseph, and Lawrence—could see storms organize into a line by evening. If that occurs, damaging wind gusts near 60 mph will become the primary hazard. Earlier, isolated storms may produce large hail and possibly tornadoes if they remain discrete.
Heavy rainfall is also a concern. Localized totals could exceed 1 to 2 inches in a short period, especially if storms repeatedly move over the same areas. This raises the risk for flash flooding on highways and low-lying roads, particularly during the evening commute window.
