Michigan wakes to a gray, wind-whipped morning as light snow drifts across lanes and sidewalks in western parts of the state. Gusts tug at coats, visibility drops in bursts, and travel quickly becomes a test of patience.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Grand Rapids and much of southwest Lower Michigan through this evening. According to the National Weather Service, periods of snow and blowing snow are expected today, with totals between 1 and 3 inches. Wind gusts near 35 mph will cause drifting and brief whiteout conditions, especially on open stretches of road.
Early temperatures hover near 6 degrees, with wind chills near 15 below. Snow showers continue through the morning commute, creating slippery conditions on I-96, US-131, and local surface streets. Reduced visibility may come and go quickly, catching drivers off guard.
Snow tapers to scattered showers later today, though roads remain slick into the evening. Even light daytime melting refreezes fast once the sun lowers, increasing the risk of flash freezing. Extra caution is advised during the evening commute.
Cold air settles in tonight as skies partially clear. Lows drop below zero, and wind chills again approach dangerous levels. Frostbite risk remains elevated for anyone outdoors too long without protection.
Wednesday brings another round of snow showers, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline, with highs near 15. Additional light accumulation is possible into Wednesday night. Thursday stays cold with lingering lake-effect snow chances, mainly west of Grand Rapids, before conditions slowly quiet late week.
Friday turns sunnier but remains cold, with highs in the mid-teens. Winter keeps a firm grip heading into the weekend, though temperatures slowly moderate by Sunday.
