Grand Rapids drivers may face slick morning commutes Thursday as showers and thunderstorms push across West Michigan before noon. Storms could create delays on I-96 and surrounding highways, especially during the morning rush.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, showers and thunderstorms are most likely between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, with a chance of additional storms through the afternoon. Winds could gust up to 20 mph. Rainfall totals may reach a quarter inch in heavier cells, reducing visibility and creating standing water on low-lying roads.

Impacts will be felt across much of southwest Lower Michigan, including Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, and Barry counties. Commuters are urged to allow extra travel time, avoid flooded intersections, and monitor alerts before heading out. Air travelers should also expect possible delays at Gerald R. Ford International Airport during morning departures.

Conditions improve by Thursday night with clearing skies and drier air moving in. Friday looks sunny and mild, offering a calmer setup heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will feature clear skies and highs in the mid-70s, a welcome break for outdoor plans.

By early next week, warm sunshine dominates, with highs reaching near 80 by Tuesday. Residents can expect a much quieter weather pattern after Thursdayโ€™s storm risk.
