Grand Rapids, MI – A strong storm system is set to bring showers and thunderstorms to Southwest Lower Michigan on Wednesday evening, with the potential for isolated severe wind gusts. The National Weather Service warns of damaging winds exceeding 30 mph, with the highest risk occurring between 6 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Rapids, gusty southerly winds of 30 mph or greater are expected Wednesday afternoon ahead of the storm’s arrival. The main threats include damaging winds, large hail, and a low but possible tornado risk. Areas within the “severe” risk zone should prepare for power outages and localized storm damage.

Residents in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and surrounding areas should secure outdoor objects, stay indoors during the strongest storms, and monitor local forecasts for updates. Those traveling during the evening hours should remain cautious of sudden wind gusts and possible road hazards.

The National Weather Service advises residents to have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts and to prepare for potential disruptions. Storm conditions are expected to weaken after midnight as the system moves east.
