Fort Wayne, IN – Residents across northern Indiana should prepare for potential severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon into the evening, with damaging winds and small hail posing the primary threats.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana, a strong cold front will move through the region Wednesday, bringing gusty winds and a chance for scattered thunderstorms between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. EDT. Areas in western Indiana have the highest risk of severe weather, particularly those within the Slight Risk (Level 2) zone on the NWS storm outlook map.
Windy conditions will persist throughout the day before the storms develop. As the front moves eastward, temperatures will drop sharply, with much colder air arriving late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. This will lead to a transition from rain to snow showers and possible drizzle early Thursday.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and have multiple ways to receive warnings. The NWS recommends securing loose outdoor objects, staying indoors during storms, and being prepared for possible power outages due to strong wind gusts.
The storm system is expected to clear by Thursday, but temperatures will remain cold, with highs only reaching the 30s and 40s through the weekend.
