Grand Rapids, MI – Western Michigan faces hazardous weather today as snow, sleet, and freezing rain create treacherous travel conditions just days before Christmas. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Clinton, Ionia, Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon counties, lasting until 11 p.m. tonight.
Areas north of I-96 are expected to see 2 to 4 inches of snow, while communities further south could experience a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and light ice accumulations. These conditions are expected to make roads slick, especially on bridges and overpasses. Commuters are advised to use extreme caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra time for travel during the evening rush hour.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will bring steady precipitation throughout the day, transitioning to lighter rain or freezing drizzle in the evening. Overnight, conditions will improve, with calmer skies expected by Tuesday. Highs today will reach the mid-30s, dropping slightly to near 30°F overnight.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring a brief reprieve with mostly cloudy skies and highs near 36°F. Christmas Day on Wednesday will likely remain dry for most of the day, with only a 30% chance of isolated afternoon showers and a high of 37°F. By Thursday, western Michigan will see mostly cloudy skies before a warming trend arrives on Friday, when temperatures are expected to reach 48°F with the potential for rain.
Residents should prepare for changing road conditions throughout the day and plan holiday travel accordingly. Stay updated on weather alerts and check local forecasts before heading out.
