Paducah, Ky. – Residents across the Four State region have two periods to watch over the next 24 hours as thunderstorms move through the area, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts, torrential rainfall and isolated severe weather before a cooler-than-normal weekend settles in. The most immediate concern arrives Friday evening, when storms are expected to spread east across southeast Missouri into southern Illinois and western Kentucky between 8 p.m. and midnight, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads including Interstate 55, Interstate 24 and portions of the Pennyrile Parkway.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a few storms Friday evening could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, isolated tornadoes and rainfall heavy enough to cause localized flooding. Southeast Missouri, including the Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff areas, has the greatest severe weather potential before storms weaken farther east into southern Illinois and western Kentucky.
Another round of thunderstorms is possible Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the greatest severe threat expected east of the Paducah forecast area. Even so, portions of the Kentucky Pennyrile region and southwest Indiana could still see a few stronger storms capable of damaging winds and heavy downpours.
Beyond the storm chances, the weekend will feel unusually cool for early August. High temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 70s to lower 80s Saturday and Sunday across much of the region before warming steadily next week. Rain chances continue off and on through Monday, then temperatures climb back toward the upper 80s and lower 90s by the middle of next week.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, monitor weather alerts Friday evening and Saturday, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Additional advisories may be issued if storms become more organized.
