Des Moines, IA – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for western Iowa, where wind chills could drop as low as -25°F overnight into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, frostbite can occur within 30 minutes of exposure. Affected areas include Fort Dodge, Carroll, Atlantic, and Boone.

Authorities urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and keep pets indoors. Farmers and ranchers should ensure livestock have adequate shelter, food, and water. Residents should also prepare for potential power outages due to the extreme cold.

Roads may become hazardous, and officials warn that black ice is possible on bridges and overpasses. Warmer conditions are expected over the weekend, but cold temperatures will persist through next week.
