Des Moines, IA – Western Iowa residents are urged to prepare for severe weather as a strong storm system moves into the area Wednesday evening. Thunderstorms are expected to develop in the late afternoon, intensifying overnight into early Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a severe weather outlook, warning of the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the NWS, storms will begin around 4 p.m. Wednesday and continue through 2 a.m. Thursday. The greatest risk is in central and southwestern Iowa, where storms could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds. High temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach the mid-80s, with lows dipping into the upper 60s overnight.

The forecast also shows a brief respite on Thursday, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s. However, storm chances return by Friday, with scattered thunderstorms possible. The weekend outlook is more favorable, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s and mostly sunny skies through Sunday. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions, particularly during the evening and overnight hours on Wednesday.
