Moline, Illinois – Residents across western Illinois and eastern Iowa have a quiet window to prepare before a more significant round of thunderstorms arrives Wednesday, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes across the Mississippi River Valley.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, pleasant and dry conditions will continue through Monday before a fast-moving cold front brings scattered showers and thunderstorms Tuesday. The more concerning weather arrives Wednesday as a stronger storm system spreads widespread showers and thunderstorms across the region, with severe weather possible.

The threat extends across much of western and north-central Illinois, including the Quad Cities, Galesburg, Macomb, Sterling, Rock Island, Moline and surrounding communities. Forecast highs Wednesday will range from the low 70s to mid-80s, providing enough instability for stronger storms to develop as the system moves through.

Travel along Interstate 80, Interstate 74, Interstate 88 and U.S. Highway 61 could become hazardous during periods of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms. Localized flooding may develop in poor-drainage areas if storms repeatedly track over the same locations.

Wednesday’s setup is part of a broader severe weather pattern expected across portions of the Midwest, where forecasters are monitoring the potential for widespread severe thunderstorms. Residents should review severe weather plans now, ensure mobile alerts are enabled, and identify sturdy shelter locations before storms develop.

Additional forecast updates are expected through Tuesday as forecasters refine the timing and severity of Wednesday’s storm threat.
