Charleston, WV – A significant winter storm is set to impact parts of West Virginia this weekend, with heavy snow and strong winds expected to create hazardous conditions from Thursday morning through Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service has issued a warning for Southeast Nicholas and Northwest Randolph counties, including the towns of Richwood and Elkins, where 6 to 12 inches of snow is forecast. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times.
In Southeast Webster, Northwest Pocahontas, and Southeast Randolph counties, including Snowshoe and Harman, snowfall totals may climb as high as 20 inches. Winds could gust up to 45 mph, raising the risk of downed trees and power lines, as well as sporadic power outages.
The storm is expected to make travel treacherous, especially during the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Officials advise avoiding unnecessary travel and preparing emergency supplies such as flashlights, food, and water.
