Charleston, West Virginia – Above-average temperatures and a more humid weather pattern are expected across West Virginia from August 5–9, bringing recurring chances for showers and thunderstorms while summer warmth builds across the Mountain State. Although many hours will remain dry, passing storms could produce locally heavy rainfall and brief travel disruptions.

According to the Climate Prediction Center’s 6–10 Day Outlook issued July 30, West Virginia is favored to experience above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation throughout the outlook period. The climate signal points toward a warm, moisture-rich pattern capable of supporting multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the mountains and valleys.

Charleston and Morgantown are expected to see temperatures rise above early August averages, while communities including Huntington, Beckley, Wheeling, Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Martinsburg, and Elkins could experience scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Some storms may produce heavy downpours, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and localized flooding in low-lying areas and along mountain streams. Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility and ponding on major routes, including Interstates 64, 68, 77, 79, and the West Virginia Turnpike during heavier rainfall.

The combination of above-average warmth and elevated humidity will make conditions feel increasingly muggy, especially in the state’s lower elevations and river valleys. Residents planning hiking trips, camping, or outdoor recreation in the Monongahela National Forest, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, or along the state’s many rivers should monitor local forecasts and be prepared to seek shelter if thunderstorms develop.
