Charleston, WV – A significant winter storm is set to impact the northeast mountains of West Virginia starting tonight, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to higher elevations. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with localized amounts up to 8 inches above 3,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, rain will transition to snow as temperatures drop overnight. Winds gusting up to 55 mph will make travel hazardous, especially on mountain roads such as US-50 and I-68. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick, and power outages are possible due to snow-laden tree limbs and high winds.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring lingering snow showers early in the day, with highs reaching 40°F in Charleston before dropping into the 20s by nightfall. Thursday will be mostly sunny, but temperatures will remain chilly with highs near 39°F. A new snow system is expected Friday, further complicating travel with additional snowfall likely.

Prepare now by ensuring your vehicle is winter-ready, stocking up on essentials, and charging electronic devices.
