Charleston, West Virginia – Gardeners across West Virginia, southeast Ohio, and northeast Kentucky are bracing for a cold snap overnight as a Frost Advisory goes into effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, threatening sensitive outdoor vegetation and early-season gardens.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, temperatures are expected to fall as low as 33°F, especially in rural valleys and typically colder pockets across Kanawha, Cabell, Wood, Jackson, Athens, Boyd, and surrounding counties. Residents in cities such as Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Athens, and Ashland are urged to take immediate action to cover or bring in tender plants.

Rural communities and valley locations from Greenup, KY to Grafton, WV will be especially vulnerable, with the potential for some areas to briefly dip below freezing. Homeowners, farmers, and landscapers should protect sensitive plants with cloth coverings or by moving containers indoors overnight.

Drivers should be aware of the potential for patchy frost on windshields in the early morning, though major travel impacts are not expected. This late-April chill is a reminder that growing season risks persist into spring across the region.

The advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday, and further cold weather alerts could be issued if another cold front approaches. Residents should check local updates and protect plants as needed.
