Madison, Wis. – Severe thunderstorms are set to slam southern Wisconsin Monday evening, bringing the risk of tornadoes, large hail, and flash flooding from 6 p.m. until at least 3 a.m. Tuesday, threatening travel and safety across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, the window for the most dangerous storms opens at 6 p.m., with all severe weather hazards possible—damaging winds, hail larger than one inch, and tornadoes. While scattered storms may develop earlier in the day, forecasters say the highest threat arrives after sunset as strong storms sweep from Madison toward Milwaukee and points east.

Major highways, including I-94 and I-39, could face hazardous conditions from intense rainfall and wind. Residents in Dane, Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Jefferson counties should secure outdoor items and plan for potential power outages. Emergency managers urge everyone to avoid unnecessary travel and have multiple ways to receive overnight warnings, especially as storms strike after dark.

This is one of the most significant severe weather threats of the spring, with the potential for damage similar to recent early-season outbreaks. Charge mobile devices, check weather apps, and make sure weather radios are on and ready before heading to bed.

Severe thunderstorm warnings remain possible into Tuesday morning. Stay alert for updates and further advisories as the situation evolves.
