Charleston, WV – West Virginia will step into a more winterlike pattern as an Arctic Blast moves into the Appalachians from Monday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 5, delivering a Cold December setup with snow showers and falling temperatures across the state.
According to the National Weather Service, early-week disturbances will bring light snow and scattered flurries, especially across the higher elevations of eastern and central West Virginia. Charleston and the Kanawha Valley may see occasional snow showers or a rain/snow mix, depending on timing and temperatures, though accumulations should remain light.
Colder air continues building through the week, with temperatures falling into the teens and 20s statewide and breezy conditions making it feel even colder during the morning and evening hours. Mountain regions—particularly along the Allegheny Front—may see more persistent snow showers as upslope flow develops behind the front.
NOAA’s 6–10 Day Temperature Outlook keeps West Virginia in the below-normal temperature zone for Dec. 1–5, reinforcing the arrival of this early-season Arctic air mass. While no significant winter storm is projected at this time, forecasters note that the combination of colder temperatures and light snow may create slick travel in mountain passes and along untreated secondary roads.
Residents should stay alert to changing travel conditions, particularly across higher elevations where snow showers may be steady at times.
