Charleston, WV – West Virginia is under a severe weather alert as a cold front moves across the state Sunday afternoon. Thunderstorms may become severe, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado threat.
According to the US National Weather Service, the strongest storms are expected to develop late Sunday afternoon, continuing into the night. Central and northern parts of West Virginia, particularly areas along the Ohio River, are at the highest risk. The service warns that hail and lightning will be among the main hazards, with a small but notable chance of tornadoes developing.
Cooler air will move in after the storm system passes, bringing dry conditions and seasonably cool temperatures on Monday. Overnight lows may dip significantly, leading to frost risks in the mountain valleys and lowland cold spots by mid-week.
