Wheeling, W.Va. – Severe thunderstorms could roll through parts of northern West Virginia this evening, bringing damaging winds and hail to areas including Brooke, Hancock, and Ohio counties. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch covers five counties in the Northern Panhandle and northern central regions: Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, and Wetzel. Thunderstorms in these areas could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter. The greatest risk for severe conditions is expected between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., especially along the Ohio River corridor.

Residents in Wheeling, Weirton, and Moundsville should prepare for sudden downpours, power outages, and hazardous travel on I-70 and Route 2. Emergency managers urge people to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel during active storms, and monitor local alerts for updates. Lightning could also pose a risk during evening commute hours.

This is the first significant severe weather watch issued for the area this month. Storm activity is expected to taper off after sunset, but more watches or warnings could follow if conditions redevelop overnight.
