Charleston, WV – Parts of West Virginia are under an Extreme Cold Warning as wind chills are forecast to plunge to -22°F through Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the warning for Northwest Pocahontas and Southeast Randolph counties, including areas near Snowshoe and Harman, from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Frostbite could occur in as little as 30 minutes, and hypothermia is a serious risk for those exposed to these dangerously low temperatures.

Earlier Tuesday, a Cold Weather Advisory was extended through 10 p.m., warning of wind chills as low as -18°F in the same areas. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor exposure whenever possible. If venturing outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin with gloves, hats, and face coverings. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors during the extreme cold.

Charleston and nearby areas will remain frigid through Wednesday, with morning flurries and highs reaching only 25°F. Temperatures will slightly improve on Thursday, with highs near 35°F and a slight chance of snow. By Friday, warmer conditions are expected, with highs reaching 44°F, though rain is likely by evening.

Drivers in higher elevations should be cautious as icy roads and reduced visibility are likely overnight. Emergency officials recommend checking on elderly neighbors and ensuring heating systems are in proper working order.
