Blacksburg, VA – Residents of Western Greenbrier County should prepare for dangerously low temperatures as an Extreme Cold Warning takes effect tonight. The National Weather Service has issued the warning from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Wednesday, with wind chills expected to plummet as low as 17 degrees below zero.

According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin in these conditions. Hypothermia is also a serious risk for those who fail to take necessary precautions. Residents are urged to dress in layers, covering exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face masks.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains active through Tuesday morning, with wind chills dipping to 12 degrees below zero. These severe conditions pose a threat to both humans and pets. Authorities recommend bringing animals indoors and checking on elderly neighbors or relatives who may be vulnerable to the cold.

The bitter weather comes as part of a five-day forecast that sees little relief. Wednesday will remain frigid, with a high near 26°F and light winds. Thursday offers some improvement, with sunny skies and a high of 37°F. However, rain is likely Friday night into Saturday, bringing added challenges for travel and outdoor activities.

What You Can Do Now:

Use portable heaters safely and avoid carbon monoxide risks by not operating generators or grills indoors.

Prepare for potential icy roads as temperatures remain low.

Follow updates from the National Weather Service for changes in the forecast.
