Charleston, West Virginia – Gusty winds, loud thunder, and the threat of flash flooding will rattle Charleston on Sunday as strong summer storms roll in by mid-morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, widespread thunderstorms are expected between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, with damaging winds reaching up to 21 mph. A Flash Flood Watch is possible, and heavy rain may lead to standing water, particularly on low-lying roads like MacCorkle Avenue and stretches of I-64 near the Kanawha River.

Localized flooding and downed tree limbs could disrupt travel across Kanawha and Putnam counties. Power outages may also occur. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roadways, and charge devices ahead of time.

Rain will taper Sunday evening, but more storms could develop Monday night. The unsettled pattern continues into early Tuesday with more thunderstorm chances after 2 p.m.

While the threat diminishes by midweek, Sunday and Monday carry the greatest risk for severe weather.
