CHARLESTON, WV — Spring weather is bringing a dangerous mix of rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding to Charleston and surrounding areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch through Sunday morning, warning residents of the likelihood of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms in the coming days.

According to the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected Friday through Sunday. These storms could produce heavy rainfall, causing flooding in small streams, creeks, and low-lying areas. Excessive runoff may result in flood-prone locations seeing increased water levels. The current forecast predicts 2 to 3 inches of rain, with the potential for more in some spots. Drivers should be alert for flooded roads, and residents are urged to stay updated on warnings.

While the flood threat continues through the weekend, severe thunderstorms are also possible Friday and Saturday, some of which may be strong enough to cause dangerous conditions. The weather service advises all residents to monitor the forecast closely and be prepared to take action if flood warnings or severe weather alerts are issued.

Spring Weather Threats in Charleston: The storms will likely cause significant delays on roadways, including Interstate 64 and other major routes, so avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Be aware of flash flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage systems.
