Charleston, WV – A major blizzard is sweeping through parts of West Virginia, with some areas bracing for up to 24 inches of snow by Saturday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Blizzard Warning for Northwest Pocahontas, Southeast Randolph, and Eastern Tucker counties, in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, heavy snowfall combined with winds gusting up to 50 mph will create whiteout conditions, making travel nearly impossible in many areas. Visibility is expected to drop below a quarter mile, and the storm could cause significant disruptions, including downed tree branches and potential power outages.
The hardest-hit areas could see snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with total accumulations ranging from 12 to 24 inches in some locations. Wind chills in the teens and 20s will add to the danger.
Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel and prepare for hazardous conditions. Emergency kits with food, water, and flashlights are strongly recommended for those who must drive.
