LUBBOCK, Texas – Warm, sunny skies are dominating the South Plains this week, but a refreshing hint of fall is waiting just beyond Friday. Residents can expect several more days of mid-80s warmth before a late-week breeze brings a cooler, more seasonable weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, south to southeast winds will strengthen through Thursday, gusting up to 25 mph at times along I-27 and U.S. 84. Highs will reach the mid-80s Friday, nearly 10 degrees above normal for mid-October. By Saturday, winds shift northwest and cooler air filters in, trimming highs back to the low 80s with crisp mornings in the low 50s.

The dry stretch continues, meaning farmers and ranchers should remain alert for elevated fire danger in open areas. Outdoor event planners, including those prepping for pumpkin patches or fall festivals, can count on sunshine and light breezes all weekend. Residents should still secure lightweight decorations and water landscaping as humidity stays low.

The extended pattern favors bright, calm afternoons—perfect for fall leaf-viewing drives or early Halloween decorating. Cooler air arrives early next week, offering the first taste of sweater weather across the Panhandle region.

Expect Lubbock’s skies to stay clear and visibility excellent through at least Tuesday. No rain is in sight, but subtle changes in wind direction signal a more typical late-October feel is coming soon.
