Midland, Texas – Dangerous thunderstorms are expected to intensify across West Texas this evening, with supercells capable of producing hail up to 3 inches in diameter and isolated tornadoes from Odessa to San Angelo through early Tuesday morning. Damaging winds may follow as storms evolve overnight.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, storms will first develop over the Texas South Plains and southeast New Mexico late Monday before spreading east across the Permian Basin and into south-central Texas. An Enhanced Risk area now includes Midland, Del Rio, and Abilene, with greatest concern for wind-driven hail and a few tornadoes into the overnight hours.
Cities at highest risk include Hobbs, Roswell, Lubbock, San Angelo, and Austin, where severe weather could disrupt evening travel and overnight power service. U.S. Route 87 and I-20 may be impacted by strong winds and low visibility due to hail cores. The green-dashed area on SPC maps highlights the corridor most likely to see 2-inch or larger hail.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and charge devices in case of outages. Tornado watches or warnings may be issued with little notice due to rapid storm development.
Severe weather remains possible across the region through early Tuesday. Stay tuned to local alerts as conditions evolve.
