Lubbock, TX – A surge of unseasonably hot weather is gripping West Texas today, with forecasted highs threatening to break long-standing April temperature records in both Lubbock and Childress.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, temperatures on Sunday, April 13, are expected to reach 97°F in Lubbock, surpassing the previous high of 91°F set in 1932 and 2006. In Childress, the forecast high of 98°F would break the 1936 record of 96°F. These highs come amid breezy west to southwest winds that are also contributing to elevated fire weather concerns across the region.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat, and remain alert to potential fire weather alerts. Gusty winds combined with dry, hot conditions can increase the risk of wildfires, especially in grassy or rural areas.

This heat event is notably above average for mid-April in West Texas, where typical highs range in the mid-70s. Emergency services advise keeping an eye on updates throughout the day and limiting activities that could inadvertently spark fires, such as outdoor grilling or using heavy machinery on dry grass.
