West Milton, Ohio – A man was arrested after an hourslong standoff Thursday on South Shiloh Road, prompting a school lockdown and multi-agency response.

According to Miami County Sheriff Dave Duchak, deputies responded around noon Thursday, Feb. 19, to the 4000 block of South Shiloh Road in Union Township for a reported mental health incident.

Duchak said the wife of Nathan C. Ferguson, 46, reported that her husband was allegedly making threats and had multiple firearms inside the residence.

As a precaution, officials issued a “soft lockdown” for nearby Milton-Union Schools while law enforcement secured the area.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team worked alongside the Darke County Special Response Team, as well as West Milton police and fire departments. Authorities remained on scene throughout the afternoon and into early evening.

According to Duchak, the decision was made to approach the residence using a tactical vehicle. As it neared the home, Ferguson exited without weapons and surrendered, Duchak said.

“It was as good of an outcome as we could have hoped for,” Duchak said, thanking assisting agencies for their support.

Ferguson was charged with fourth-degree domestic violence and booked into the Miami County Jail. Authorities said crews cleared the scene around 6:30 p.m.

The incident temporarily affected families and students in the Milton-Union district during the school day.

Officials have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
