San Francisco, CA – Above-average temperatures and rain are forecast to dominate the West Coast this Christmas season.

The National Weather Service predicts warmer-than-normal conditions from December 20–26, significantly reducing the chance of snow along the coastal areas of Northern California. Precipitation is expected to be near normal, which may bring rainstorms to cities like San Francisco and Sacramento.

Higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada, however, have a stronger chance of snow. Areas like Lake Tahoe and Yosemite could see accumulating snowfall, making them potential destinations for a white Christmas. Lower-elevation residents hoping for snow should temper expectations, as conditions are likely to remain too warm for any lasting snow.

As always, travelers heading into mountainous areas should prepare for possible winter weather hazards and check updated forecasts for road conditions.
