San Angelo, Texas – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for all of west central Texas as forecasters warn of accumulating snow, sleet, and ice followed by dangerous cold temperatures this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, the watch is in effect from Friday afternoon, Jan. 23, through late Saturday night, Jan. 24, 2026, covering west central Texas, including San Angelo, Abilene, Sweetwater, Brownwood, Brady, Coleman, Junction, and surrounding communities.
Forecasters say moderate to heavy accumulations of snow, sleet, or ice are likely from Friday through Saturday night. Exact precipitation types and amounts will vary by location, but conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly as temperatures fall below freezing.
Roads are likely to become slick and hazardous, especially bridges and overpasses, increasing the risk of crashes and travel disruptions. Where ice accumulates, tree damage and power outages are possible due to the added weight on power lines and limbs.
In addition to winter precipitation, the National Weather Service warns that dangerous cold temperatures are expected to develop Saturday night through Monday morning. The extreme cold could become life-threatening for those without adequate heating, damage unprotected pipes, and pose a serious risk to livestock and pets.
Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely as confidence increases in precipitation type and severity. Officials recommend preparing homes and businesses ahead of Friday, assembling emergency kits, and checking on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and friends.
Travel plans for the weekend may need to be delayed or adjusted as hazardous conditions develop. Those who must travel are advised to use extreme caution and carry winter emergency supplies.
Forecasters emphasize that additional advisories or warnings are likely as the event approaches and details become clearer.
