Abilene, Texas – A prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat is settling into West Central Texas, with triple-digit temperatures expected nearly every day through next weekend. Heat index values are forecast to climb as high as 107 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, temperatures will be slightly lower this weekend before climbing back above 100 degrees for much of next week. Afternoon highs are expected to reach 100 to 103 degrees in Abilene, 101 to 103 degrees in San Angelo, 100 to 105 degrees in Sweetwater, and 100 to 103 degrees in Haskell through the week. Other communities, including Brownwood, Ballinger, Coleman, Brady, Junction, Ozona, and San Saba, will also experience widespread upper 90s to lower 100s.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity will push heat index values between 104 and 107 degrees across portions of West Central Texas. Sweetwater is forecast to see heat index values up to 104 degrees, while Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, Coleman, and San Saba could all experience apparent temperatures of 105 degrees or higher during the hottest part of the week.

Residents are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Outdoor workers should use extra caution, and children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles.

The extended period of heat is expected to last through next weekend, with only limited relief in sight. Additional heat advisories or warnings may be issued if temperatures or heat index values trend even higher.
