Grand Junction, Colorado – Fire danger is surging across west-central Colorado Monday as gusty winds and dry air combine to create critical wildfire conditions, especially below 7,000 feet from the Grand Valley to Montrose.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. for the Lower Colorado River Valley, including New Castle, Delta, and Paonia. Westerly winds will reach 25 to 35 mph, with humidity dropping to just 10 to 15 percent — a combination that significantly elevates fire risk.
The warning affects the North Fork of the Gunnison River area, spanning from Delta to Paonia to Montrose. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and officials urge residents to ensure campfires are fully extinguished and to avoid activities that could spark flames.
While no major precipitation is expected, a warming trend will push temperatures 5 to 15 degrees above normal later this week. Isolated afternoon storms may pop up over the central and northern mountains, but are unlikely to bring relief.
Critical fire weather conditions remain through this evening, and additional alerts may be issued if dry, windy weather persists into the week.
