Greeley, CO – A late-night traffic stop in Weld County led deputies to a methamphetamine discovery after a K-9 alerted to narcotics inside a vehicle, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the department, a member of its strike team pulled over a Dodge Caliber on Monday night near 49th Street and 35th Avenue in Greeley for an equipment violation. Deputies requested assistance from a K-9 unit, which conducted an exterior sweep of the vehicle. The K-9 allegedly alerted to the presence of narcotics coming from inside.
Deputies searched the vehicle and field-tested a substance they recovered, determining it to be approximately 1.21 grams of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said.
The driver, identified by deputies as 40-year-old Jason Frederick, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance–schedule II. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle with a revoked license—listed by authorities as habitual offender–traffic—and failure to provide proof of insurance. All charges are accusations at this stage, and Frederick is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Sheriff’s officials said the incident highlights how a routine equipment violation can escalate into a more serious investigation when additional factors emerge. The department added that proactive traffic enforcement helps remove dangerous drugs from the streets of Weld County.
The case remains under investigation, and no court dates have been released as of Tuesday.
