Newport, NC – Residents in eastern North Carolina woke up to frigid conditions Friday morning, with a cold weather advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Wind chills as low as 8 degrees and icy roads, including along Highway 264, are creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will remain below normal today, with highs near 39 degrees under partly sunny skies. Tonight’s low will plunge to 18 degrees, prompting officials to urge residents to bundle up and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Frostbite and hypothermia risks remain high in these conditions.
The weekend will bring gradual relief. Saturday is expected to be sunny with highs reaching 44 degrees and light winds. By Sunday, temperatures will climb further to a mild 49 degrees with mostly sunny skies.
The warming trend will extend into next week. Monday carries a slight chance of rain and a high near 49 degrees. By Tuesday, expect highs in the upper 50s, offering a noticeable break from the cold.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution on potentially icy roads this morning and overnight. Stay informed through local weather updates and dress appropriately for freezing temperatures.
