Chicago, IL – Drivers across Northern Illinois should prepare for hazardous travel conditions this week as dense fog grips the region Monday, followed by increasing chances of snow midweek. Fog is expected to reduce visibility to near zero at times through late Monday morning, impacting major highways like I-80 and I-39.
According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday. Visibility could drop sharply in a matter of moments, particularly in northern and central Illinois and northwest Indiana. Motorists are urged to turn on low-beam headlights, drive slowly, and allow extra travel time.
As the fog clears later Monday, a colder pattern will emerge with light snow possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Accumulations north of I-80 could reach up to an inch, creating slick road conditions during the Wednesday morning commute. Breezy winds may further reduce visibility during snowfall.
Looking ahead, another round of snow could develop late Thursday into Friday, increasing concerns for snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. Lake-effect snow showers may affect northwest Indiana by the end of the week, with temperatures dropping into the 20s over the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with local forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing travel conditions. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, check road conditions before heading out, and allow additional time when snow or fog develops.
The National Weather Service forecasts highs ranging from the low 30s to mid-40s through Thursday, with colder, seasonable temperatures settling in by the weekend.
