Newport, NC – Dense fog will blanket parts of eastern North Carolina Monday morning, creating hazardous driving conditions and limited visibility on key roadways like Highway 70 and U.S. Route 17. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less, particularly during early commuting hours. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra time for travel.

According to the NWS Newport/Morehead City office, the fog advisory precedes an unseasonably warm start to the week. Monday’s high is expected to reach 69 degrees under mostly sunny skies after the fog clears. On Tuesday, temperatures will climb to a high near 72 degrees, but conditions will change mid-week as a cold front pushes through the region.

Tuesday night will bring a slight chance of showers, followed by a 60% chance of rain Wednesday night. Temperatures will dip significantly, with lows dropping to around 51 degrees. Rainfall amounts are expected to remain light, but isolated thunderstorms could develop during the day Wednesday.

Thursday marks the arrival of colder, drier air, with highs reaching only 59 degrees under mostly sunny skies. By Friday, temperatures will plummet further, reaching a high of 54 during the day and dipping to near-freezing at night with a low of 31 degrees.

Residents should take advantage of the early-week warmth but prepare for rain mid-week and freezing conditions by the weekend. Ensure vehicles are equipped for foggy commutes and colder weather later in the week.
