Western Maryland & West Virginia – A blizzard warning has been issued for parts of Maryland and West Virginia, with snow accumulations of up to 10 inches possible in some areas. The storm is expected to bring life-threatening travel conditions and power disruptions beginning tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning will take effect at 9 p.m. Wednesday and continue through 3 p.m. Thursday. Garrett County, MD, along with Western Grant and Pendleton Counties in WV, will face heavy snow combined with wind gusts of up to 55 mph. Visibility may drop to near zero at times, creating whiteout conditions.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and ensure they have a winter survival kit on hand. The heaviest snowfall and lowest visibility are expected early Thursday morning, posing significant risks to commuters.

Strong winds could also down trees and power lines, leading to outages across the region. Additionally, wind chills are forecast to drop near or below zero by Thursday evening, increasing the risk of frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold.

Authorities recommend securing outdoor items, preparing for potential power disruptions, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. If you must travel, call 511 for real-time road conditions. Stay informed by visiting weather.gov/lwx or following updates on local news outlets.
