Spokane, Washington – Snow and strong winds are expected to impact mountain travel across parts of eastern and central Washington beginning early Friday, prompting Winter Weather Advisories through late Friday night and Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. PST Saturday for the Northeast Blue Mountains, including Cloverland Road, Mountain Road, Anatone, and Peola. Forecasters expect 3 to 7 inches of snow above 3,000 feet, with 1 to 3 inches at lower elevations, along with wind gusts up to 55 mph. Strong winds may increase the risk of tree damage and blowing snow.

A separate advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST Friday for Western Chelan County, including Holden Village, Stevens Pass, and Stehekin. Snowfall totals of 4 to 9 inches are forecast, with up to 12 inches possible near Stevens Pass. Winds in this area may gust as high as 40 mph.

The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes, as snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and gusty winds combine in higher terrain.

Drivers traveling through mountain passes and backcountry routes are urged to slow down, carry winter driving supplies, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Updated road and travel information is available through the Washington State Department of Transportation at wsdot.wa.gov/travel.

Winter Weather Advisories are issued when conditions are expected to cause significant travel disruptions, especially in mountainous areas.
