Seattle, Wash. – A significant warm-up is set to spread across western Washington early this week, sending temperatures into the 90s across many inland communities and increasing the risk of heat-related illness through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, Moderate (Orange) HeatRisk is expected across large portions of western Washington from Monday afternoon through Wednesday, with the hottest temperatures forecast Tuesday and Wednesday. The elevated heat risk could impact anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration, particularly older adults, young children and those with underlying health conditions.
Inland communities are expected to see the highest temperatures. Forecast highs include 97 degrees in Issaquah Tuesday, 96 degrees in Auburn Tuesday and Wednesday, 95 degrees in Chehalis Tuesday and Wednesday, 93 degrees in Olympia Tuesday and Wednesday, 92 degrees in Bellevue Tuesday and Wednesday, and 90 degrees in both Seattle and Tacoma Tuesday. Coastal communities and the San Juan Islands will remain noticeably cooler.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water before becoming thirsty, spend time in air-conditioned buildings when possible, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Officials also recommend checking on neighbors, relatives and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Relief arrives later in the week as temperatures gradually cool into the 70s and lower 80s by Friday and through the weekend. Until then, the early-week heat will be the primary weather concern across much of western Washington, and additional heat advisories remain possible if temperatures trend even higher.
