Spokane, Washington – Fire crews across central and north-central Washington are bracing for scattered thunderstorms and dangerous fire conditions Thursday as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, lightning strikes and erratic wind gusts up to 50 mph could spark new wildfires and rapidly spread any existing blazes in the East Washington Central Cascades, Okanogan Valley, Methow Valley, Colville Reservation, and surrounding areas.
Abundant lightning is expected across the North Cascades National Park, Lake Chelan, and Okanogan Highlands through Thursday evening. Humidity will drop as low as 20%, with temperatures soaring near 90°F. Officials warn that outflow winds from passing thunderstorms may carry embers miles from storm centers, posing a serious threat to homes and critical infrastructure along State Routes 20, 97, and near Winthrop, Chelan, Omak, and Twisp.
Residents are urged to avoid all outdoor burning, secure spark-producing equipment, and have evacuation plans ready. Emergency agencies recommend charging devices, monitoring local alerts, and preparing vehicles for potential rapid departures. This is the region’s most widespread Red Flag Warning of the summer, reminiscent of the 2021 Methow Valley fire outbreak.
The threat will remain elevated until at least 8 p.m. Thursday, with additional advisories possible if storms persist into the night.
