Angie, LA – A 53-year-old man was killed and another seriously injured Saturday after a single-vehicle crash on LA Highway 21 near LA Highway 438 in Washington Parish, according to Louisiana State Police Troop L.

Investigators say the crash happened around 11:50 a.m. January 4, when a 2003 Toyota Camry driven by 45-year-old Shantrell M. Spikes of Angie reportedly crossed the center line and ran off the road. The car re-entered the highway, overcorrected, and overturned into a ditch.

According to police, 53-year-old passenger James M. Brister of Angie, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died at the scene. Spikes, also unrestrained, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers say Spikes showed signs of impairment and was later arrested for Vehicular Homicide, Driving While Intoxicated (First Offense), Careless Operation, and No Seatbelt Worn. Toxicology samples have been collected as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and remind drivers of the deadly risks of impaired and unrestrained driving. “Taking simple precautions such as never driving while impaired and always wearing a seat belt can often mean the difference between life and death,” Louisiana State Police said in a statement.
