Washington, Iowa – Large hail is already falling across eastern Iowa this morning, with a dangerous storm capable of causing immediate damage as it tracks through the Washington area.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 10:15 a.m. CDT for northwestern Louisa County, southeastern Johnson County, and east-central Washington County. As of 9:40 a.m., the storm was centered over Haskins, about 9 miles northeast of Washington, and moving east at 30 mph.
Law enforcement has confirmed golf ball-size hail, measuring up to 1.75 inches in diameter. This size hail can shatter windows, dent vehicles, and cause significant damage to roofs and siding. The storm carries a considerable damage threat, especially for anyone outdoors.
Communities in the direct path include Washington, Haskins, Gladwin, and areas near the Washington Municipal Airport. Short bursts of heavy precipitation and hail may quickly reduce visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions on local roads and highways.
Residents should move indoors immediately and stay away from windows. Those outside should seek shelter in a sturdy building, as hail of this size can cause serious injury.
This storm will continue moving east through mid-morning, and additional warnings may be issued if the system strengthens or expands.
