Washington wakes to wet streets and low clouds as an active December weather pattern tightens its grip on the Seattle area. Rain taps steadily on rooftops, drains struggle to keep up, and rivers begin to respond after days of soaking moisture.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday afternoon for parts of western Washington, including Seattle and King County. Several rounds of rain are expected through midweek, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, near creeks, and along urban roadways.

Rain continues today with periods of heavier showers possible by afternoon and evening. Gusty winds may accompany passing systems, adding to difficult driving conditions. Roads like I-5, I-90, and SR-520 could see ponding water, especially during peak travel hours. Drivers should slow down and watch for standing water in poorly drained spots.

Temperatures stay mild for December, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Snow is not expected in Seattle, but nearby foothills and mountain passes could see accumulating snow. That raises concerns for holiday travel routes outside the metro area as winter weather builds across the region.

By Wednesday and Thursday, rain remains persistent, with little time for rivers to recede. Saturated ground increases the chance of localized flooding and minor landslides on steep slopes. Officials urge residents to clear storm drains and avoid flooded roadways.

Looking ahead to the extended five-day outlook, rain continues into Friday with cooler nights dipping toward the upper 30s. By the weekend, models hint at a possible rain-and-snow mix at higher elevations while Seattle stays mostly rain-soaked. Even without freezing temperatures, slick roads remain a concern during early morning and evening hours.

Plan extra travel time, keep emergency kits ready, and stay weather-aware as December storms line up.
