Washington, District of Columbia – Rain will overspread the Interstate 95 corridor by midafternoon Sunday, creating wet roadways and reduced visibility for drivers heading home before sunset.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, steady rain will expand north and east through 3 p.m. Sunday, with temperatures ranging from 38 to 45 degrees across the region. Higher elevations west of I-81, including portions of Washington and Allegany counties in Maryland and the West Virginia highlands, could see limited snow accumulation where highs hold between 34 and 39 degrees.
Roadways including I-95, I-495, I-270 and I-66 will turn slick during periods of steadier rain. In the mountains near I-68 and along U.S. 40, a rain-snow mix may briefly reduce visibility late Sunday afternoon and early evening. While significant accumulation is not expected, untreated bridges and overpasses could become slippery where surface temperatures hover in the mid-30s.
Clouds may linger into Monday morning before gradual clearing develops during the afternoon. Highs Monday will range from the upper 30s to lower 50s, followed by a milder Tuesday with temperatures climbing into the mid-40s to lower 60s under increasing sunshine.
Drivers should allow extra travel time Sunday evening and watch for ponding water on highways. Additional light precipitation is not expected after Sunday night, but damp conditions could persist into the Monday morning commute.
