Maryland wakes up under a piercing winter chill as Arctic air surges across the region. Streetlights flicker on empty roads, breath turns white instantly, and exposed skin stings within minutes. Temperatures hover near 19 degrees around Baltimore and Northern Virginia, while wind chills dip close to zero, creating hazardous conditions early.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Hazardous Weather Outlook highlights the cold and strong winds through the morning hours. A Gale Warning remains in effect for the lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, where powerful gusts whip choppy waters. Marine travel is strongly discouraged until conditions improve.

Drivers face mostly dry roads, but the cold itself becomes the risk. Prolonged exposure without protection can turn dangerous fast. Residents should dress in layers, cover hands and faces, and check on older neighbors. Pets should stay indoors until temperatures rebound.

Relief arrives quickly. Sunshine dominates today, allowing highs to climb into the upper 20s and near 30. Cold air retreats further Tuesday as calmer winds and bright skies push temperatures into the upper 30s. By Wednesday, a dramatic shift unfolds. Afternoon highs surge near 50 degrees, melting frost and softening frozen ground.

That thaw brings another transition to watch. Clouds increase late Wednesday, and rain develops Thursday, with wet roads likely during evening travel. While temperatures remain mild, meteorologists note rapid swings this time of year can still lead to slick spots after sunset if colder air returns.

This pattern reflects December’s volatility across the Mid-Atlantic. Winter cold strikes suddenly, then gives way to springlike afternoons before the next system arrives.

Plan for the cold this morning, then prepare for changing conditions later in the week.
